ASTM C127 - Specific Gravity and Absorption of Coarse Aggregate

ASTM C127 - Specific Gravity and Absorption of Coarse Aggregate

Applies to QEST Web App

This article describes the data entry process and features of the Specific Gravity and Absorption of Coarse Aggregate ASTM C127 worksheet in the QEST Web App.

Overview

This worksheet allows data entry for the testing of coarse aggregate for the Specific Gravity and Absorption per ASTM C127 test method.

Preparation

The preparation section of the worksheet allows the user to record details about the preparation of the test sample according to the test method.

Initially Prepared Mass Recorded

When the Initially Prepared Mass Recorded checkbox is checked, the Tare and Initially Prepared Mass (g) and Initially Prepared Mass (g) fields will appear in the Measurements section of the worksheet.

The Tare and Initially Prepared Mass (g) field is a data entry field for users to record the tare and initially prepared weight of the sample in grams.

The Initially Prepared Mass (g) field is a read only field that will auto-calculate the prepared mass of the sample in grams by subtracting the weight entered in the Tare Mass (g) field from the Tare Initially Prepared Mass (g) field.

Aggregate Soaked

When the Aggregate Soaked checkbox is checked, the Soaking Period (h) field will appear for data entry. See the Soaking Period (h) section below for more details

Aggregate Oven Dried Prior to Soaking

When the Aggregate Oven Dried Prior to Soaking checkbox is checked, the Tare and Oven Dry Mass (g) and Oven Dry Mass (g) fields will appear before the saturated surface-dry mass data entry fields in the Measurements section of the worksheet. This is to assist with matching the workflow of the laboratory data entry.

Soaking Period (h)

A data entry field is provided to allow users to enter the soaking period of the material in hours.

Equipment

For equipment to be available for selection in equipment drop down boxes, the equipment item must first be created in QESTLab’s Equipment list. Refer to article Creating Equipment.

Data Entry - Measurements

This section allows the data entry of measurements and masses taken of the coarse material to determine its specific gravity and absorption.

Users can note the nominal maximum and minimum aggregate size of the material being tested. The fields that allow data entry include tare masses, prepared masses, oven dry masses and saturated surface-dry masses of the test material including the temperature of the water bath used for soaking the test material.

Users can add multiple Test Portions or trials by clicking on the black plus (+) icon to right of the first test portion.

Results

This section will display the calculated and reportable results.
