Setting up Moisture Tins to Use with Barcodes

Applies to All

This article describes the basics of getting started with using barcodes on moisture tins.

Overview

The following article describes the steps required for setting up moisture content tins with barcodes for rapid identification purposes.

Labels

Before getting to this point, the barcode labels to be used should already be obtained and ready to use.

If not, this article can provide useful information: Selecting Barcode Labels for Moisture Content Tests

Labelling the Moisture Tin

The label supplier should be able to provide the necessary instructions for applying the labels to the moisture tins, if there are any special requirements.

The fundamental requirements usually are that the surface, that the label is to be applied to, is clean and dry and free from any traces of grease and oil.

Unless the manufacturer’s instructions say otherwise, the labels should be applied when the tins are at normal room temperature.

Once the labels have been attached, the moisture tins should be left for the recommended curing time (if any) before being used for the first time.

Matching the Barcode to the Moisture Tin

Once the barcode label is physically attached to the moisture tin, the barcode value needs to be entered into the Equipment List properties of the Equipment Item for the moisture tin.

The barcode value can be typed in, but the quickest, and best, way is to select the Barcode field and scan the barcode on the tin.

Replacing a Barcode

With continued use, the situation may arise that a barcode label can no longer be scanned reliably and will need to be replaced.

If the barcode labels are printed “in-house”, the replacement barcode can use the same value as the previous label, if desired.

If pre-printed barcode labels are used, applying a new barcode label with a different value works fine.

The above configuration process should then be applied, so that the current barcode value is replaced by scanning the new label once it is attached.

While it is only necessary to carry out the configuration process if a new (different) barcode value is used, it is recommended that it be done for both cases.
