BS 1377-2 Clause 3.2: Determination of moisture content (Oven-drying method)

Applies to QEST Web App

This page describes the functionality of the BS 1377-2 Clause 3.2 Determination of moisture content (Oven-drying method) test in the QEST Web App.

Overview

This worksheet allows for data entry per BS 1377-2 Clause 3.2.

Data Entry

Preparation

When this worksheet is first added, the preparation section is pre-populated with the most common values for performing this test, assuming that the the drying temperature is 105°C and the sample does not contain gypsum or salt.

The predetermined values can always be modified by clicking the Change button in the preparation section.

Contains Gypsum

If the user indicates that the sample contains gypsum, the worksheet will assume that the drying temperature should not exceed 80 degrees Celcius.

Contains Dissolved Salt

After checking the Contains Dissolved Salt checkbox, the user will need to indicate whether the amount of salt is measured in Parts per thousand (ppt) or Volume (grams per litre) and then indicate the amount of dissolved salt.

If the Volume measurement is used, the fluid density is also required in order to calculate the fluid content.

Grain Size

The selection of the grain size determines the expected minimum sample mass and the minimum balance readability requirement per the standard.

Measurements

The measurements in this test are quite simple being composed of the tare mass, tare and material wet mass and, finally, the tare and material dry mass.

It is expected that the first two masses will be captured on the individual worksheet along with the ID of the container being used and the Tested By will be set. The material will be placed in the oven and the dry mass populated after the drying operation is completed.

Entry of the dry mass in this water content test will be available for data entry in the Dry Mass Entry grid.

Results

The Results section will show the calculated moisture content result and it will be reported. If the material contains dissolved salt, the calculated fluid content will also be shown and reported.

If there is no dissolved salt in the material, the fluid content is not calculated or reported.

Equipment

For equipment to be available for selection in equipment drop down boxes, the equipment item must first be created in QESTLab's Equipment list.  Refer to article Creating Equipment.
