This article explains the process of importing a reference density to be used on a field density workflow.

Overview

A number of field density workflows allow for the importing of a laboratory reference density. In the case of Australian tests, this is often to support the use of assigned maximum dry density tests. In the case of New Zealand test methods, it exists to support the common scenario of using one representative maximum dry density test for multiple field density tests.

Reference Density Search

By Project

Workflows that allow the user to import a reference density result will allow that user to search for the appropriate test. By default, the list of available results will be constrained to the current project.

By Material

The user can also elect to restrict the available options by a given material or product. In this case the user will be able to select the material of interest in order to refine the list of available test results.

The supplier, source and material options available in these drop downs come from the associated lists populated in QESTLab. If the option to allow free entry on the material list is set by a system administrator, then materials will not be searched, only predefined materials can be used for this filtering capability.

Viewing Results

Clicking on the Reference Density Sample ID drop down will list all completed reference density tests on the current project that are allowed by the current workflow. The list will show the sample ID as well as density and optimum moisture content values.

Selecting one of the available options will import and show more details from that specific test and sample so that the user can ensure they have selected the correct test.

External Reference Density

It is possible to define an external reference density to use on a workflow when the reference density section is present. In this case, the user will be asked to provide all the relevant details by hand.

Field Prompt	Expected Information
Supplier	The material supplier. Options available here come from the Agg/Soil Material Supplier list populated in QESTLab. If the free entry option is enabled on this list by a system administrator via the QEST Administrator Console, the setting will be honored by QESTField Tests.
Source	The material source. Options available here come from the Agg/Soil Material Source list populated in QESTLab. If the free entry option is enabled on this list by a system administrator via the QEST Administrator Console, the setting will be honored by QESTField Tests.
Material	General description of the material or product under test, applicable to all samples on the work order. Options available here come from the Agg/Soil Materials list populated in QESTLab. If the free entry option is enabled on this list by a system administrator via the QEST Administrator Console, the setting will be honored by QESTField Tests.
Soil Description	A soil description specific to the current sample.
Method Name	The test method number or name by which the reference values were determined.
MDD/PCWD (t/m³)	The raw laboratory determined maximum dry density or peak converted wet density to be used as a reference.
OMC (%)	The raw laboratory determined optimum moisture content at which the reference density occurs.
Adjusted MDD/PCWD (t/m³)	The maximum dry density or peak converted wet density to be used as a reference adjusted for oversize material. This is the value that will be compared to the field measurements in order to calculate a result. If there is no oversize material present, this should value should be equal to the raw laboratory value.
Adjusted OMC (%)	The optimum moisture content at which the reference density occurs adjusted for oversize material. This is the value that will be compared to the field measurements in order to calculate a result. If there is no oversize material present, this should value should be equal to the raw laboratory value.
App. Particle Density (t/m³)	The soil particle density from the reference density test.

Relative Compaction

When a reference density is defined on a workflow, it is possible to calculate results in the field. By pressing the Calculate button after completing data entry, the user can review the results of the test.
