Overview

Sieves can have their aperture size defined and sieve sets can subsequently be configured to contain specific sieves to allow for identification of which individual sieves were used on which tests. This page outlines how these configuration tasks can be completed.

Sieve Aperture Size

Every sieve equipment item can have its aperture size set through the properties tab on the equipment item. Sieve aperture sizes are predetermined in the QEST Platform.

The Only show common sieve sizes checkbox controls whether all possible sieve sizes are shown in the Sieve Size drop down or only those which are commonly used.

The Sieve Size drop down can be used to select the sieve aperture size for the equipment item. The unit system/format used for the sieve aperture size will depend on the unit system setting for the laboratory in which the equipment item is present.

Sieve Sets

Once sieves have been registered and configured with appropriate aperture sizes, sieve sets can also be configured.

A sieve set is a set of sieves which are used together when performing tests. In the QEST Platform a sieve set is configured by first listing the aperture sizes of the sieves included, followed by identifying the individual sieves used for each aperture size.

Since some sieves (like those commonly used for material separation and washing) can deteriorate faster than others, a sieve set can have a placeholder for an aperture size without a specific sieve being selected as part of the configuration.

The aperture size will still be added to the sieve grid on the worksheet where the sieve set is selected in the QEST Web App and technician will then be free to select the appropriate sieve that they are using.

When configuring a sieve set the following properties are set first.

Sieve Set Size Units

Defines whether the sieve set size (diameter or width) will be set primarily in inch-pound or metric units.

Sieve Set Size

The size of the sieve set that determines its nominal surface area. This information, along with the sieve aperture size, is used on QEST Web App worksheets to determine the maximum mass that is allowable on that sieve if defined by the test method governing the worksheet.

The user is able to set custom circular or rectangular sizes if the preset sizes don’t capture the size of the sieves in question.

Sieves in Sieve Set

Sieve aperture sizes are added by pressing the button at the bottom of the grid. Each row in the grid will allow the user to define the desired aperture size to include in the sieve set, as well as identify a specific sieve that is used in the sieve set at that aperture size.

It is possible to add an aperture size to a sieve set but not nominate a sieve that is used within the sieve set at that aperture size. In this way, when the sieve set is used on a sieve test worksheet, the aperture size will be added to the worksheet and the technician will be able to select any sieve to use in that spot. In the example below, the 3/4” sieve ID is left blank and the technician will select the specific sieve that they will use when performing the test.
