Overview
This worksheet allows data entry for testing soils using a Hand Shear Vane.
In-House Method
This test is carried out in many construction materials testing organisations throughout the UK but does not have a test method defined by the British Standards Institute or the European Committee for Standardisation. As this test does not have an official method defined, this is documented as an In-House Method
Data Entry
Preparation
The preparation section of the worksheet allows the user to record the preparation details for the tests such as the weather, vane depth, and equipment information.
The factor and maximum readings can be entered manually if no Hand Shear Vane equipment is selected.
Equipment
For equipment to be available for selection in equipment drop down boxes, the equipment item must first be created in QESTLab's Equipment list. Refer to article Creating Equipment.
The following equipment can be selected on the worksheet:
Equipment label | QESTID |
---|---|
Hand Shear Vane | 30176 |
Measurements
This section allows for the recording of the final reading for each of the four shear measurements.
If the Results not obtainable checkbox is checked:
The Reason radio buttons will be displaced immediately below.
The results section fields will not be calculated, and
An informational message shows in the Results section stating that the result is not obtainable.
If reading exceeds the maximum reading of the hand shear vane in use, the technician can check the Maximum Exceeded checkbox. This clears the Reading field and adjusts the vane shear strength to be > the max strength that can be recorded by the equipment.
Reporting
The results from this worksheet can be reported on the following test reports.
