Overview
The particle density by wire basket test method worksheet can be used to determine the particle density and water absorption of clean, coarse, aggregates. It is based on the methodology of the Determination of Particle Density and Water Absorption, Wire Basket, method (BS EN 1097-6 Clause 7).
This article provides information on how the various choices available within the QEST App version of this test method provide the required pathways to deal with the variations within the test.
Data Entry
Test Portion Preparation
Fraction Tested
The selection of the fraction tested affects the appearance of the Preparation of Test Portion and Mass of Test Portion subsections.
Selection | Result |
---|---|
| |
|
Treatment of Oversize Particles
These radio buttons are for recording purposes only. The selection of any button has no effect on the worksheet itself.
Mass of Test Portion
The test method sets a minimum test portion mass for the test, based on the maximum particle size present.
Setting the Upper Aggregate Size automatically selects a value for the Minimum Test Portion Mass, based on the following table, which is derived from Table 1 of the test method.
Sieve Aperture Size (mm) | Minimum Test Portion Mass (g) |
---|---|
63.0 | 15,000 |
56.0 | 11,900 |
53.0 | 10,550 |
50.0 | 9,200 |
≤ 45.0 | 7,000 |
If the test portion mass is less than the minimum required mass, the test portion should be replaced with a new, larger, test portion.
If there is insufficient sample to meet the minimum mass requirements, the test may still be completed and be reported as a test result with a minimum mass deviation. See Results section below.
Measurement
Soaking
A warning is provided if the soaking time is not in the range 24 h ± 0.5 h. This does not prevent the test from proceeding.
Water Density
A test water temperature is required, so that the correct density of water can be determined using Table G.1, Annex G, of the test method.
The test method requires that this temperature is in the range 22°C ± 3°C .
If the required temperature range cannot be achieved, but the temperature is in the range 5°C to 30°C, the test may still be completed and be reported as a test result with a temperature deviation.
See Results section below.
Drying
The test method requires that the test portion be dried to a constant mass. This means that a minimum of two drying and weighing operations must be completed.
If drying to constant mass has been achieved, the test portion dry mass will be calculated.
If constant mass has not been achieved, a warning that the test portion is not dry is provided.
In the latter case, the test portion will require further drying and an extra line will need to be added to the worksheet grid.
A warning is also provided if the drying oven temperature is not in the range 110°C ± 5°C. This does not prevent the test from proceeding.
Equipment List
For equipment to be available for selection in equipment drop down boxes, the equipment item must first be created in QESTLab's Equipment list. Refer to article Creating Equipment.
The following equipment items can be selected on the worksheet:
Worksheet Equipment Item | Equivalent to Qest Equipment Item (Qest ID) |
---|---|
4.00 mm Sieve | Sieve (30137) |
31.5 mm Sieve | |
63.0 mm Sieve | |
Preparation Balance | Balance (30005) |
Soaking Thermometer | Thermometer (30007) |
Clock | Timer (30047) |
Test Thermometer | Thermometer (30007) |
Balance | Balance (30005) |
Wire Basket | Wire Basket (30108) |
Oven | Oven (30004) |
Drying Balance | Balance (30005) |
Some equipment on this worksheet imports equipment properties or calibration values. Ensure that these properties and values are set on the relevant equipment in order to avoid having to enter these values every time.
Results
There are five “normal” test results that will always be reported:
Fraction Tested
Apparent Particle Density
Oven-dried Particle Density
Saturated and Surface-dried Particle Density
Water Absorption
Additionally, the following two values are made available for optional reporting:
Test Portion Mass
Test Water Temperature
The displayed values of the results are all rounded to match the reporting requirements.
Reporting
The Report checkboxes at the end of the Results section allow selection of optional reportable results.
The results from this worksheet can be reported on the following test report.
Particle Density Test Report (120057)
This report is a child document of the test worksheet. It is automatically added to the sample when the test worksheet is selected.

Work Progress and Complete Status
The work progress rules noted below are the default set of rules for this test, these may be overwritten by system administrators and therefore behave differently on each QEST Platform instance.
Progress (%) | Criteria |
---|---|
0% | A sample has been created and this test has been added. |
20% | Test Portion Mass has a non-zero value. |
40% | Soaking Period has a non-zero value. |
70% | Test Portion SSD Mass has a non-zero value. |
100% | The test is complete |
