NZS Nuclear Density Testing Workflows

Applies to QESTField Tests

This article covers the data entry process for entering test results related to:

  • NZS 4407:2015 Test 4.2 the field water content and field dry density of compacted materials - direct transmission.

  • NZS 4407:2015 Test 4.3 the field water content and field dry density of compacted materials - backscatter mode.

Overview

The data entry process in QESTField for NZS 4407:2015 Test 4.2 and NZS 4407:2015 Test 4.3 is composed of a single-page workflow per shot of field density testing. This article will discuss how to add and complete data entry for a point of testing.

Data Entry

Setup

Refer to the Setup Section article for details on how to set the values on this section.

Sample Details

The sample details section provides fields for entering general information about the sampling process and material details for 2 scenarios:

  1. With Relative Compaction

  2. Without Relative Compaction

With Relative Compaction

Workflows that import a reference density value will not have fields to enter material details in the Sample Details section. Instead, the material details will be copied from the reference density sample. Most NZS QESTField workflows do import a reference density.

Importing a Laboratory Reference Density

Workflows that import a reference density value will not have fields to enter material details. Instead, the material details will be copied from the reference density sample. See the Importing a Laboratory Reference Density article for more information.

Without Relative Compaction

The workflow Nuclear Density [NZS 4407:2015 Test 4.2] (No Relative Compaction) does not include a relative compaction test and does not allow the importing of a reference density value. Therefore the Sample Details section will have additional fields for Source, Material, and Soil Description in this workflow.

Test Location

Refer to the Setup Section article for details on how to enter location values.

Reference Density for Relative Compaction

Workflows that contain a relative compaction test for NZS 4407: 2015 Test 4.2 and Test 4.3 allow the import of a reference density value. See the Importing a Laboratory Reference Density article for more information. The only workflow that does not allow the import of a reference density is Nuclear Density [NZS 4407:2015 Test 4.2] (No Relative Compaction).

Field Density Test

This section allows the user to enter the test data relevant to the both NZS field density tests:

Field Prompt

Expected Information

Field Prompt

Expected Information

Density Gauge

The density gauge used for the test, from QESTLab's equipment register.

DS

The field density standard count.

MS

The field moisture standard count.

Probe Depth (mm)

The depth of the nuclear density probe.

Test Density Count

The density count at the test site from the gauge.

Test Moisture Count

The moisture count at the test site from the gauge.

Wet Density (t/m³)

The wet density value read directly from the gauge.

Moisture Content (%)

The moisture content value read directly from the gauge.

Moisture Correction Factor

Imports from Moisture content correction factor document on work order (if exists).

Corrected Moisture Content (%)

Calculated by multiplying the field Moisture Content by the Moisture Correction Factor

Dry Density (t/m³)

The dry density value read directly from the gauge.

Important

The field prompts for this section are identical his identical to the field density section for NZS 4407:2015 Test 4.2 except there is no probe depth due to it being a backscatter test.

Relative Compaction

When a reference density is defined on a workflow, it is possible to calculate results in the field. By pressing the Calculate button after completing data entry, the user can review the results of the test. This section is not available in the Nuclear Density [NZS 4407:2015 Test 4.2] (No Relative Compaction) workflow.

Available Workflows

There are four alternative workflows for the NZS 4407:2015 Test 4.2 test method, as listed below.

Variant

Behaviour

Variant

Behaviour

Nuclear Density [NZS 4407:2015 Test 4.2]

Adds a relative compaction test to the sample as the reference density test to be completed at the laboratory as well as the appropriate test reports.

Nuclear Density [NZS 4407:2015 Test 4.2] (Lab Moisture)

Adds a moisture content test and relative compaction test to the sample as the reference density test to be completed at the laboratory as well as the appropriate test reports.

Nuclear Density [NZS 4407:2015 Test 4.2] (Lab Moisture/Lot Conformity)

Adds a moisture content test and relative compaction test to the sample as the reference density test to be completed at the laboratory as well as a lot conformity test to the work order along with the appropriate test reports.

Nuclear Density [NZS 4407:2015 Test 4.2] (No Relative Compaction)

Does not allow import of a reference density test or calculate results based on that reference density test.

There are four alternative workflows for the NZS 4407:2015 Test 4.3 test method, as listed below.

Variant

Behaviour

Variant

Behaviour

Nuclear Density [NZS 4407:2015 Test 4.3]
