RMS - Soil and Aggregate Field Density Testing Process
QEST Platform 5.0 Documentation
Applies to QESTLab
This article describes the necessary work order structure and data entry process in QESTLab for field density testing to RMS test methods.

Work Order Structure
RMS
When performing field density testing to RMS standards it is possible to determine the final result as either a:
- Dry Density Ratio
- Converted Wet Density
- Density Index
In each of these cases, a different structure is used, described below.
Dry Density Ratio
Work order structure for RMS field density tests contain aggregate/soil samples with the following tests as children of the sample:
- Field Density - an option of one of the following:
- Nuclear Field Density
- Field Density Sand Replacement
- Reference Density Result - an option of one of the following:
- Maximum Dry Density - Standard
- Maximum Dry Density - Modified
- Min/Max Dry Density
- Moisture Content
- Relative Compaction
And the following tests on the work order level:
- Dry Density Ratio Report
- Lot Conformity(optional)
The worksheets need to be completed so they can be referenced on the Relative Compaction worksheet. The exact details for each completing each of these worksheets is explained in the documentation for each specific test method. The results from the Relative Compaction worksheet are then reported onto a work order level RMS DDR Report.
Converted Wet Density
When determining a density index, the work order contains aggregate/soil samples with the following tests as children of the sample:
- Field Density test - an option of one of the following:
- Nuclear Field Density
- Field Density Sand Replacement
- Reference Density Result - an option of one of the following:
- Converted Wet Density
- Maximum Dry Density
- Moisture Content
- Relative Compaction
And the following tests on the work order level:
- Relative Compaction Report
- Lot Conformity (optional)
Density Index
When determining a density index, the work order contains aggregate/soil samples with the following tests as children of the sample:
- Field Density test - an option of one of the following:
- Nuclear Field Density
- Field Density Sand Replacement
- Reference Density Result
- Maximum Dry Density Cohesionless
- Moisture Content
- Relative Compaction
And the following tests on the work order level:
- Density Index Report
Data Entry Process
Kiosk
The discussion below assumes that neither QESTField Tests or QESTLab's Kiosk mode are being used. With QESTField Tests all field results and sample details will be entered by the technician, on site. With kiosk mode, all moisture content results and laboratory test results will be entered using the Kiosk functionality.
- Create a work order and apply the structure discussed above depending on the result of interest.
- Add the number of samples for the work order.
- On the bulk entry screen
- Fill in the sample level information
- The Nuclear Field Density test screen contains all field results hence it can (and should) be filled in immediately after the technician returns from the field
- If oversize is present, enter this information in the "Details" frame on the Compaction Control, Relative Compaction or Density Index test screen.
- Enter Moisture Content test data as it becomes available
- Enter the Reference Density data or, if an Assigned MDD is being used, ensure it is up to date
- Back on the bulk entry screen
- The Moisture Content test and Reference Density test data is automatically imported onto the Compaction Control, Relative Compaction or Density Index test screen if these tests are on the same sample. If an Assigned MDD is being used, the sample number on which the assigned test resides must be entered. Import the sample level MDD, Assigned MDD, Min/Max or CWD result or enter results for an "external" sample.
- Complete the rest of the relevant fields on the "Results" frame Compaction Control, Relative Compaction or Density Index test screen.
- Complete steps steps 3 to 5 for other samples included in the field density test on the work order.
- Open the Test Report to view the report.
