Setup Section
QEST Platform 5.1 Documentation
Applies to QESTField Tests
This article describes the data entry expected for the first section of the Australian and New Zealand nuclear field density workflows.
Contents
Overview
Every Australian and New Zealand nuclear density workflow begins with a Setup section where the user can set the type of location information that they will be entering along with the ultimate compaction requirements for the test results. The available options differ slightly for Australian and New Zealand workflows and are explained below.
Australian Workflow Location Type
The Setup section for Australian nuclear field density workflows include a Location Type drop down menu as well as a Requirements drop down menu which is explained later in this article.
The Location Type drop down provides the user with four options:
- Sitework
- Roadworks
- General
- Coordinates
The user will be asked to provide different location information depending on the selected option as explained below.
Sitework
This is the default selection when starting the first workflow on a work order and provides the user with five general fields for location data entry.
Field Prompt | Expected Information |
---|---|
General Location | The general location at which all of the work for the current work order is taking place. This is often a city, suburb or project site name. Copies from the work order location, if available and the appropriate option is set. |
Location (1 though 5) | Free entry text fields for describing the test location. Note that this information can potentially be displayed in a narrow column on the resulting test reports (up to 6 columns per page) so effort should be made to keep each line short. |
Layer/Depth | The layer type being tested. Options available here come from the Layer/Depth/Elevn list populated in QESTLab. If the free entry option is enabled on this list by a system administrator via the QEST Administrator Console, the setting will be honored by QESTField Tests. |
These five fields appear as separate lines on the corresponding test report in QESTLab. Reports will hide trailing location lines if no samples on the work order have data populated in them.
Prompts
Prompts on the report for the location lines can be modified by setting work order level location fields appropriately in QESTLab. Any changes made to these prompt fields in QESTLab will not be reflected in QESTField.
Copying of General Location
The general location will only copy from the work order location if the Copy Down Work Order Location option under the Lab -> Configuration -> Options -> Work Orders node in the QEST Administrator Console is set to True. Setting this option requires System Administrator rights and access to the QEST Administrator Console.
Roadworks
This option allows the user to enter location information specific to road work.
Field Prompt | Expected Information |
---|---|
General Location | The general location at which all of the work for the current work order is taking place. This is often a city, suburb or project site name. Copies from the work order location, if available and the appropriate option is set. |
Road Name/Section | The name of the road or section of road under test. |
Chainage (m) | The chainage along the road or section where the test is taking place. |
Offset (m) | The distance measurement from the "reference point" below that the test is taking place. Often this is an offset right or left from a centerline. |
Offset From | The "reference point" that the offset measurement was taken from. Options available here come from the Offset From list populated in QESTLab. If the free entry option is enabled on this list by a system administrator via the QEST Administrator Console, the setting will be honored by QESTField Tests. |
Layer/Depth | The layer type being tested. Options available here come from the Layer/Depth/Elevn list populated in QESTLab. If the free entry option is enabled on this list by a system administrator via the QEST Administrator Console, the setting will be honored by QESTField Tests. |
These fields appear as separate lines on the corresponding test report in QESTLab with the same prompts as in QESTField.
Prompts
Prompts on the report for the location lines can be modified by setting work order level location fields appropriately in QESTLab. Any changes made to these prompt fields in QESTLab will not be reflected in QESTField.
General
This option provides the same data entry field as the Sitework option. It is supported in QESTField for compatibility with QESTLab only.
Coordinates
This option will set the location type to Sitework but will also populate GPS coordinates and treat the 5 location lines as specialized coordinates fields, described below.
If any sample in the work order is set to Coordinates then the Coordinates type is assumed for the entire work order. This handles the use case where the user changes to to the Coordinates type on sample 2+ on the work order and wishes to return to the first sample to enter their coordinates.
Changing the location type from Coordinates on a sample will clear the work order level location description labels.
The appearance of the Location section for Coordinates is based on the value of the Use Northings/Eastings document level option for aggregate/soil samples.
Eastings/Northings
Field Prompt | Expected Information |
---|---|
General Location | The general location at which all of the work for the current work order is taking place. This is often a city, suburb or project site name. Copies from the work order location, if available and the appropriate option is set. |
Eastings | A manually entered numeric value in the format 0.0000. See Notes below. |
Northings | A manually entered numeric value in the format 0.0000. See Notes below. |
Elevation / Reduced Level (m) | A manually entered numeric value in the format 0.00. |
Other Details | Two free entry text fields for describing further information about the test location. These fields correspond to Location 4 and 5 for Sitework. |
Layer/Depth | The layer type being tested. Options available here come from the Layer/Depth/Elevn list populated in QESTLab. If the free entry option is enabled on this list by a system administrator via the QEST Administrator Console, the setting will be honored by QESTField Tests. |
Notes
The order of the Eastings and Northings fields on this data entry screen is reversed from QESTLab but this is the accepted convention [1]
The zone should also technically be included in these coordinate types for the sake of completeness. The reality is however that testing occurs entirely within one zone and this information is not commonly reported.
Latitude/Longitude
Field Prompt | Expected Information |
---|---|
General Location | The general location at which all of the work for the current work order is taking place. This is often a city, suburb or project site name. Copies from the work order location, if available and the appropriate option is set. |
Latitude | A manually entered numeric value in the format 0.000000. |
Longitude | A manually entered numeric value in the format 0.000000. |
Get Coordinates | Tapping this button will try to retrieve the Latitude and Longitude information from the device that QESTField Tests is running on. |
Elevation (m) | A manually entered numeric value in the format 0.00. |
New Zealand Workflows
The Setup section for New Zealand nuclear field density workflows include a Moisture Correction Factor, Location Type drop down menu as well as a Requirements drop down menu which is explained later in this article.
The Location Type drop down provides the user with two options:
- Site Numbers
- Roadworks
The user will be asked to provide different location information depending on the selected option as explained below.
Site Numbers
This is the default selection when starting the first workflow on a work order and provides the user with site number location data entry. This option will set the location type to Sitework in QESTLab.
Field Prompt | Expected Information |
---|---|
Site No. | The site number that refers to the test's location. |
Layer/Depth | The layer type being tested. Options available here come from the Layer/Depth/Elevn list populated in QESTLab. If the free entry option is enabled on this list by a system administrator via the QEST Administrator Console, the setting will be honored by QESTField Tests. |
These fields will be displayed in the first columns for test results on the corresponding test report in QESTLab.
Report View
The report view for the Field Density Report will be set to Site.
Roadworks
This option allows users to enter information to specific to road work.
Field Prompt | Expected Information |

Offset From | The reference point that the offset measurement was taken from. |
These fields will be displayed in the first columns for test results on the corresponding test report in QESTLab.
Report View
The report view for the Field Density Report will be set to Road.
Moisture Correction Factor
The Moisture Correction Factor is displayed to inform the user if the Field Moisture Content will be corrected.
- If the value is N/A, no Moisture Correction Factor document is included on the Work Order. The moisture correction factor can be directly entered per test later in QESTLab.
- If the value is 1.000000. a Moisture Correction Factor document is included on the Work Order but has not been calculated in QESTLab yet.
- A value is displayed for the Moisture Correction Factor. The Field Moisture Content will be corrected using this value.
Requirements
After selecting the location type, the user is provided the option of selecting the requirements for the tests taking place. The requirements drop down may already be populated when first creating the work order in the QESTField Scheduler, QESTField Tests or in QESTLab.
Options available here come from the Customer Requirements list populated in QESTLab. If the free entry option is enabled on this list by a system administrator via the QEST Administrator Console, the setting will be honored by QESTField Tests.
Subsequent Tests and Changing the Setup
On subsequent nuclear field density testing workflows on the same work order, the Setup section of the workflow will no longer show editable values but, rather, a read-only view of the previously selected options. The user can opt to Change these values on any workflow on a work order but this will change the setting on every sample on the work order and so should use with care.
