This article describes the functionality of the Emerson Class Number test in QESTLab.

Worksheet Layout

QESTLab worksheets for this test type are laid out in the following manner. 



The test screen consists of six sections starting from the top left and moving counter-clockwise are:

  • Equipment section is where equipment used to perform the test can be selected from drop down menus.
  • The Check for Slaking and Dispersion section is where data entry for the test can be entered.
  • Second Dispersion Check section will appear if  the Slaking Occurred checkbox is checked and the Dispersion drop-down menu is set to None.
  • Check for Presence of Calcite or Gypsum will appear if the Second Dispersion checkbox is unchecked.
  • Suspension Test will appear if the Check for Presence of Calcite or Gypsum checkbox is unchecked.
  • The Results section is where results can be entered from the test.  Also, a Class Description of the soil can be populated by pressing the Classify button.
