Using the Same Equipment Item for Multiple Test Portions
Applies to QEST Web App
When a test requires multiple test portions to be used, it can be possible to choose to re-use the same equipment items for each test portion. This article describes how this can be implemented.

Overview
There are some tests that require multiple test portions to be tested before a final result can be determined. Probably one of the most common examples of this type of test is the soil compaction test, used to determine the moisture/density relationship of soils. Usually, at least four test portions are required to be tested. While it is entirely possible to use separate compaction molds for each test portion, it is generally more convenient to only use the one mold for all of the test portions.
This article explains how QEST Web App worksheets can assist in this approach to testing multiple test portions.
How it works
The following uses the ASTM D 698 Standard Proctor worksheet as an example.
If the same equipment item can be used for multiple test portions, the worksheet will show a checkbox labelled Use for all test portions for that item.
When the checkbox is ticked, the corresponding property and/or calibration fields will be copied from the equipment item to the test portions, and the inputs for the test portions will be locked.
When the checkbox is unticked, these fields will be unlocked (unless they are locked for some other reason), and can be entered per-test portion.
When the checkbox is changed from unticked to ticked, a confirmation dialog will be displayed. If the change is confirmed, data on the test portions will be overwritten, otherwise the checkbox will remain unticked.
When the checkbox is changed from ticked to unticked, no data is modified or overwritten, and no warning is provided.
Missing Values
If some, or all, of the property and/or calibration values are missing when an equipment item is selected, they should be filled in before the checkbox is ticked.
Once the checkbox is ticked, any empty values will be copied as blank values to the test portion fields and all the test portion equipment fields will be locked, preventing input.
If this happens, simply untick the checkbox and add the missing value(s) to the equipment item fields before re-ticking the checkbox and confirming the change.
Ensure that all equipment properties and calibration values are set on the relevant equipment in order to avoid having to enter these values every time.
