Programming Keyboard Wedge Barcode Scanners

Applies to QEST Web App

This page describes the process to configure keyboard wedge barcode scanners to work with the QEST Web App at a particular laboratory

Contents

Prerequisites

The configuration described in Configuring Keyboard Wedge Scanner Barcode Prefix Key must be completed prior to that described on this page. A system administrator must carry out the configuration detailed in the link above and provide details on what the correct prefix key is.

Programming Known Scanners

Once the desired prefix has been set, any keyboard wedge scanners to be used will need to be programmed to output the desired keys in the desired order. Barcode scanners are usually programmed by scanning a predetermined set of barcodes in the correct order. The table below provides the barcodes required to program the given scanners to prefix scanned data with the F8 key and terminate it with the Enter key.

If a different prefix than F8 was selected or the selected scanner does not appear in the list below, consult the scanner’s manual for details on how to program it.

The barcodes provided should be printed and scanned in order from top to bottom to program each scanner appropriately. It may be necessary to cover the other barcodes in the vicinity of the one being scanned in order to avoid the scanner picking up the wrong code.

The barcode sequence below assumes that Enter is the default suffix.

Verify Scanning

Once the barcode scanner has been programmed, it should be confirmed that the output matches the required format and content. A website that shows the full output of keyboard events after scanning a barcode can be used to do this.

After the initial verification of the barcode format has taken place, the final step to verifying everything is configured correctly is to scan a barcode within the QEST Web App. In order to do this, navigate to the QEST Web App and scan any barcode (it does not need to be one that the QEST Web App will recognise). If the scan is successful, the web app will respond after processing the barcode. Even if the barcode is not recognized, a response means that the scan was successful.
