Separation Sieve(s)
This functionality will usually exist on most sieve analysis worksheets.
This field shows the sieves where separations have been added. It is a read-only field that will show “None”, or a default value, depending on the test method requirements, when first viewed.
It is updated if the separation settings are modified by pressing the Manage Separations button.
Managing Separations
This functionality will usually exist on most sieve analysis worksheets.
Samples that require size reduction, for splitting the sieving over smaller sieve set sizes, can be accommodated through the introduction of separations to the sieving procedure.
In the QEST Web App this is handled through a process referred to as Manage Separations.
When the Manage Separations button is clicked the following appears:
Clicking the Separate button divides the Sieve Portion into two parts:
The default separation size can vary based on the test procedure, here it is 20.0 mm. The dropdown list allows other separation sizes to be selected.
A second separation can be added if required. When there is more than one Separate button present, clicking one of them will separate the portion that it appears next to.
On completion of the Manage Separations process, new Sieving and Separation sections are added to the worksheet and titled appropriately. The timing of the first separation also affects the section names.
The name Initial Separation is used when a specimen is separated, usually over a coarse sieve, into two parts before the actual sieving operation takes place.
Is Initial Separation Used? | Section Title for | Section Titles for | Section Titles for |
---|---|---|---|
Yes | Portion Sieving

No | Portion Sieving | Coarse Portion Sieving Separation Fine Portion Sieving | Coarse Portion Sieving Separation 1 Portion 2 Sieving Separation 2 Fine Portion Sieving |
The Separating Sieve(s) field is updated to match the selected separations.
