Overview
This article is a subset of ASTM D6913 Particle-Size Distribution (Gradation) of Soils Using Sieve Analysis and covers those parts that change as a result of adding separations to the testing process. In this case, the article describes the state of these parts when no separations are implemented.
Together, these articles provide information on how the various choices available within the QEST Web App version of this test method provide the required pathways to deal with the variations within the test.
This worksheet contains a wide grid for some results.
When using tablet devices, landscape orientation will allow more of the grid to be shown at once.
Using Results from Other Tests
General functionality is described in the article Associated Test Results.
The following test method is embedded in this worksheet:
Data Entry
Test Preparation
This example is provided to show how the Separating Sieve(s)
field indicates the number of separations in use.
If Method B is to be used for the sieve analysis test, it can only be carried out in this mode.
For details on this section, refer to the main page .
Specimen Preparation
This section remains unchanged, for all separation choices, to that shown on the main page.
Sieve Portion Mass
Dry Mass Determined By
Selection | Action |
---|---|
Default | The appropriate fields are available to record the oven drying process and, ultimately, calculate the dry mass of the test portion. |
| The available fields are reduced to those needed to record the wet mass of the test portion and a choice is offered for the method of obtaining the water content of the test portion, see below. Once all the information is available, the dry mass of the test portion is calculated from the wet mass using the water content (w). |
Portion Water Content Determined By
Selection | Action |
---|---|
Default | An embedded water content test (ASTM D2216) is made available to determine the moisture content. |
The fields necessary to import a water content result from an ASTM D2216 test are made available. See Associated Test Results for more details on this process. |
The dry masses in the embedded water contents will be available for dry mass data entry in the Dry Mass Entry grid.
