WA Nuclear Field Density Testing Workflow

Applies to QESTField

This article covers the data entry process for entering test results related to WA 324.2 Determination of Field Density: Nuclear Method.

Contents

Overview

The data entry process in QESTField for WA 324.2 is composed of a single-page workflow per shot for field density testing. This article will discuss how to add and complete data entry for a point of testing.

Data Entry

Setup

Refer to the Setup Section article for details on how to set the values in this section.

Sample Details

The sample details section provides fields for entering general information about the sampling process and material details.

Field Prompt

Expected Information

Field Prompt

Expected Information

Sample ID

An automatically generated identifier for this test point and any material sampled from the location.

Container/Field Sample ID

Used to record where more than one container is used to collect a sample. If multiple containers are used, all relevant IDs should be recorded here.

TRN

A Test Request Number (if one exists or is available) can be entered here if a different number needs to be used for each sample. Otherwise the work order level TRN field should be set in QESTLab.

Client Sample ID

If the client has a sample number by which they would like to refer to this sample, it should be entered here.

Sampled By

The name of the tester and sampler. Automatically set to the name of the currently logged in user.

Date Sampled

The date of the test, automatically populated from today's date of the device being used.

Since today's date is automatically populated when entering this data, care should be taken when performing data entry for previous days' work since this date will need to be manually adjusted for every point of testing on that work order.

Time Sampled

The date of the test, automatically populated from the current time of the device being used.

Since the time is automatically populated when entering this data, care should be taken when performing data entry for previous days' work since this date will need to be manually adjusted for every point of testing on that work order.

Sampling Method

The sampling method applicable to the sample being taken. Options available here come from the Sampling Method list populated in QESTLab.

If the free entry option is enabled for this list then the free entry option will also be available in QESTField Tests. The free entry option can be enabled in the QEST Administrator Console by a user with system administrator rights.

Source

General source of the material under test. Options available here come from the Agg/Soil Material Source list populated in QESTLab.

Material

General description of the material or product under test, applicable to all samples on the work order. Options available here come from the Agg/Soil Materials list populated in QESTLab.

If the free entry option is enabled for this list then the free entry option will also be available in QESTField Tests. The free entry option can be enabled in the QEST Administrator Console by a user with system administrator rights.

Soil Description

A soil description specific to the current sample.

Test Location

Refer to the Setup Section article for details on to enter location values.

Field Density Test

This section allows the user to enter the test data relevant to the WA 324.2 test method.

Wet density on this workflow is always to determined using a calibration equation of the form Slope x Ln(DR) + Intercept where DR = Test Count/Density Standard Count. The nuclear gauge must have a completed calibration task associated using the Calibration Equations from Standard Density Ratios worksheet. Field Prompt

Expected Information

Field Prompt

Expected Information

Mode

The mode of the nuclear gauge, the field is locked to Direct Transmission for this test method.

Density Gauge

The density gauge used for the test that is selected from QESTLab’s equipment registry.

Transmission Test Depth (mm)

The depth of the nuclear density probe.

Calibration Equation

A read-only field showing the calibration equation of the form Slope x Ln(DR) + Intercept

Calibration Slope (t/m³)

A read-only field showing the slope calibration constant retrieved from the calibration worksheet for the given gauge, test depth and calculated density ratio.

Calibration Intercept (t/m³)

A read-only field showing the intercept calibration constant retrieved from the calibration worksheet of the given, test depth and calculated density ratio.

Enter all Counts

Option to record or not record all the density standard counts. The checkbox is defaulted as checked for the first test on a given work order to allow users to record the density standard counts. Subsequent tests will copy the mean density count value from the first test, once this has been calculated.

Density Standard 1.1

The first density standard count of the pair of density counts required by the WA 324.2 test method.

Density Standard 1.2

The second density standard count.

If the second density standard count is out of tolerance, QESTField will display the following warning to the user.

Density Standard 1.3

The third density standard count if the first two counts are out of tolerance.

If the third standard count is out of tolerance, QESTField Test will display the following warning to the user.

The Density Standard 1.3 field will only appear in the workflow if the Density Standard 1.1 and 1.2 counts are not in tolerance.

Density Standard Count 2.1

The final density standard count. This count should be entered after the completion of all the density tests have been performed on the site.

Density Standard Count 2.2

A second final density standard count if the first standard density count is out of tolerance.

If the second final density count is out of tolerance, QESTField Tests will display the following warning to the user.

The Density Standard Count 2.2 field will only appear in the workflow if the Density Standard Count 2.1 is not in tolerance.

Mean Density Count

The field is defaulted as a locked field for data entry but will display the calculated mean density count when a final density standard count that is within tolerance has been entered in the density standard count 2.1 or 2.2 field(s).

Once calculated on the first test, this value will propagate to all subsequent WA 324.2 field density tests on the work order.

If testing requires to record a new mean density count that differs from the first or previous test's mean density count, the field can be edited by clicking on the Enter Manually button.

If a test’s mean density count has been edited, a user can choose to copy the previous mean density count to the subsequent test by clicking on the Copy Previous button.

Test Density Count

The density count at the test site from the gauge.

Density Count Ratio

A read-only field that calculates the density ratio, (DR) = Density Count / Density Standard Count.

Wet Density (t/m³)

The wet density calculated from the imported calibration equation and density ratio.

Moisture Content (%)

The moisture content from the gauge. This field is not reported or used on the WA relative compaction test but is available so that an indicative gauge dry density can be provided.

Gauge Dry Density (t/m³)

The calculated gauge dry density. Initially calculated from the gauge wet density and moisture content, will be overwritten once the laboratory moisture content value is entered.

Depth of Layer (mm)

Depth of the layer that is being tested.

Other Tests

This section will show a list of other tests added to the sample when this workflow has been added to the work order. The tests are usually laboratory tests to be completed on soil samples collected at each testing site.

Available Workflows

Listed below are the five alternative workflows for the WA 324.2 test method.

Variant

Behavior

Variant

Behavior
